BAWSI women to compete in Silicon Valley 5K Run/Walk
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 14, 2005) - Athletes who have trained in two BAY AREA
WOMEN'S SPORTS INITIATIVE programs will compete Sunday, Oct. 30 in the 5K
Run/Walk of the Metro Silicon Valley Marathon.
The Women Running the Country program, in which college and professional
women athletes have mentored the training of more than 400 women, culminates
in participation in the 5K Run/Walk.
In addition, girls who have participated in BAWSI's GoGirlGo! teams at Overfelt
and Independence high schools and Pomeroy and San Antonio elementary
schools will compete in the event. GoGirlGo! is a program created by the
Women's Sports Foundation and implemented in the Bay Area by women
college athletes working with girls who do not participate in sports because of
economics, health, lack of motivation, encouragement or opportunity.
All participants will walk or run alongside Bay Area women athletes and sports
figures such as karate athlete Mary Crawford, San Jose State women's basketball
coach Janice Richard, track coach Sandy Sanchez and wheelchair tennis star
Sharon Clark Kelleher. The 5K Run/Walk benefits the Silicon Valley Children's
Hospital Foundation.
BAWSI is a non-profit public benefit corporation that utilizes the talent and
experience of Bay Area women athletes in improving the lives of children and
women. Visit our website at www.bawsi.org.
